Meet Pip: The Pocket Explorer
Model: Kawasaki Versys-X 250
If you think you need a 1200cc engine to see the heart of Japan, Pip is here to politely prove you wrong. While the bigger bikes are worrying about their waistlines on narrow bridges, Pip is zipping through the Iya Valley like a dragonfly. He’s the most approachable bike in the garage, but don't let his size fool you—he’s got the soul of a world traveler.
The "Rindo" Ninja
Japan’s mountain "Rindo" (forest roads) are often no wider than a driveway.
The Pip Experience: This is Pip’s natural habitat. Because he’s so light and has a high-revving parallel-twin engine, he feels like a mountain bike with a jet pack. If a road gets muddy, rocky, or just plain weird in the Tokushima backcountry, Pip just skips over it. He’s the bike you want when the map says "Road" but the terrain says "Good Luck."
The "Chinkabashi" Master
The Shimanto River is famous for its 47 submersible bridges with no railings.
The Pip Experience: If crossing a rail-less bridge on a 250kg bike sounds like a nightmare, try it on Pip. He’s so balanced and light that you could practically do a U-turn in the middle of the bridge (please don’t). He gives you the confidence to look at the scenery instead of staring death in the face.
High-Revving Heroics
Unlike the thumping singles, Pip has a twin-cylinder engine that loves to scream.
The Pip Experience: To get the most out of him on the Shikoku Karst, you’ve got to work the gearbox—and that’s the fun part! It makes you feel like a GP racer even when you’re just going to buy a bento box. He’s got enough "legs" to handle the highway, but he’s at his happiest when the speed limit drops and the corners get tight.
Urban Stealth: Kurashiki & Beyond
In the tiny, 400-year-old alleys of Kurashiki, Pip is a ghost.
The Pip Experience: He’s narrow enough to fit through gaps that would make a pannier-clad GS weep. You can park him in the tiniest "bicycle-only" spots (don't quote me on the legality there) and navigate the most crowded tourist ports without breaking a sweat. He’s the ultimate "friendly neighbor" of the motorcycle world.
Why Choose Pip?
Pip is for the intrepid minimalist. He is for the rider who knows that the best views are often at the end of the narrowest paths. He is incredibly cheap on fuel, easy to pick up if you tip him over in a mossy hair-pin, and has a "can-do" attitude that puts the heavyweights to shame.
The big bikes are still trying to three-point turn. Pip is already at the summit. Coming?
